Nasty Woman Wines will also donate 20% of the sales back from each purchase that uses this code back to The Nourish Foundation.
Today, we’d like to introduce you to Meg Murray, the inspiring founder of Nasty Woman Wines. Learn more about her journey behind launching and growing her brand.
We love the story of how Nasty Woman Wines got started after the 2016 election. Beyond launching your own wine brand, what journey did that fateful election night set you on?
I felt like i needed to do something, and THIS was my something. Nasty Woman Wines channeled my energy into meaningful and productive action. So instead of just feeling frustrated and angry, I could do something beautiful, interact and connect with people I admire, and eventually, use the collective strength of all of these great women to generate funds to support MORE women.
What made you decide on wine as the product that you would launch? Were you already a wine connoisseur prior to starting this?
That’s such an intimidating word: connoisseur. It makes wine seem so rich and formal. I am not a wine snob. I would say I know wine. I have my level 2 Sommelier Guild Certification. I started in the wine industry way back in 2003, so I’ve been in the wine industry for nearly two decades now. I have my own wine consulting firm which connects me with a lot of different wineries and people. And this insider knowledge, combined with my desire to spin a truly demoralizing political result into something positive created NASTY WOMAN WINES. But back to connoisseur.
I want my wine to be accessible. I want it to reflect me! My belief system. In truth, this wine is a very accurate representation of women supporting women benefits everyone. I love that in bringing this wine to light, in creating and launching this company, I’ve worked with so many impressive, talented women. Designing, producing, writing, selling, promoting. There are many layers to starting a business, and I tried to ensure that I relied upon the diverse talent and skills of women. When people ask for advice, I often tell them to hire smart people. It’s been a godsend to be surrounded by so many talented women that have skill sets where I do not.
This doesn’t intimidate me - on the contrary, I find it so reassuring to know I have a team of incredibly skilled and thoughtful people I can trust to get the job done well.
Who were some of your early champions when launching your own company and what kept you going?
My husband has been supportive and sees not only the value in what I am doing but the joy it brings me. I also would be remiss not to mention Emily Davis. Emily stepped up to the plate early on and really helped NASTY WOMAN WINES create her own voice. Emily took on the copywriting and social media and helped create the foundational voice of NASTY WOMAN WINES. Coffee keeps me going most days and when that doesn't work a nap does.
You’ve rooted Nasty Woman Wines in philanthropy and being of service to a certain degree, how do you select some of the organizations that you decide to help?
Having the profits go back to organizations that supported woman was an internal part of my business plan. I was told 5% was standard, but that didn’t feel impactful enough. I wanted 20% of net profits to go back, but I also wanted a sustainable business with triple bottom line - meaning, focused on people, profit and planet. With this as a pillar of my company, I have constantly fostered partnerships and strategic relationships that provide mutually beneficial results. When I work with companies, I always approach it thinking how we can support each other, how can we come out of this working relationship better, with both of us feeling we’re getting the better deal
As for which organizations I support, it’s so wide ranging, as I believe in anything that supports getting women into positions of power to make deacons and provide representation. And the barriers to this are so deeply rooted in our patriarchal society that there are nearly endless ways we can choose to fight this: abortion rights. Gun Safety. Women in Tech. Access to Healthcare. Childcare. How women are repressed and held back in our society takes many forms and is collective, it is death by a 1000 paper cuts. So NASTY WOMAN WINES is my way to give women a boost. It allows me to employ, partner, celebrate and support a diverse array of Nasty Women.
What upcoming projects are you most excited about ?
We have a handful of partnerships in the pipeline that are super exciting.
We can’t discuss them yet, but keep your ears peeled. There are a couple new Nasty Women coming out in winter 2021. Introducing a new Nasty Woman Wine is easy one of my favorite elements of this job, as I get to meet my own idols and inspirations and honor them. It gives me such joy and satisfaction to be able to repay their positive impact on my life with the opportunity to be in our NASTY WOMAN WINES collection.
Seriously - super exciting stuff happening soon so follow our Instagram @nastywomanwines to see what’s about to happen.
